Introduction

Welcome to KSFS:

I'm Dennis, the 305 Coordinator for this semester. Any questions or concerns can be directed to me via e-mail, and I can point you in the right direction. You may also contact Juliet, the Communications Director with any questions or concerns.

This semester we're bringing the station in a new direction by increasing the level of digital communication and interaction. By asking me questions, you help the management team figure out how to better serve the needs of new students, and develop increased communication between 305 and 505 students.

The KSFS Wiki Manual is the new centralized location for everything at KSFS. We are doing our best to make it intuitive, comprehensive and user friendly. It can be edited by anyone (including you) by following the simple steps on the Wiki Instructions page, or simply follow the link below and watch the video. (Always keep the instructions page as a reference.)

What's a Wiki? Watch the "Wikis in Plain English" Video.

It doesn't take a technical expert to participate in the KSFS Wiki Manual Project, because contributions don't need to look perfect the first time around. Almost everything written will be edited, modified, formatted, and perfected over the course of the semester, then cut, copied, pasted, organized, and finalized shortly thereafter. The important thing is that you have an have fun, learn a lot, then commit to sharing that knowledge with future KSFS students.

Radio Station Participation

  • Mailing List: Make sure you're on the KSFS staff mailing list. If you received a mass email from the Communications Director leading you here, then you are enrolled in the class and on the list. If not, contact Professor Jeff Jacoby at jjacoby@sfsu.edu to make sure that you are on the list and enrolled in the class. If you added the class, then not being on the list is probably normal. Email jeff anyways to make sure he doesn't forget about you.

  • Any Problems? Any issues, problems, or concerns about anything should be directed towards the Communications Director. Contact information is located through the Class Contacts Page. You have already been sent the password for this semester in an e-mail, and announced it in class. If you still can't find it, email Jeff Jacoby at jjacoby@sfsu.edu. Also, write down the KSFS & CATS contact information on the Class Contacts Page.

  • Questions? Post any questions about the Wiki Manual to Class Q & A page. Any ideas or recommendations you can make for the online manual should be put on the Manual Improvements page. (This Manual is in its infancy for the time being, and we could use a lot of suggestions)

  • Departments: Read about departments, and find tasks that you may be interested in volunteering for. (information is currently incomplete. some references are made on the Station information page. Use the Class Contacts page to talk to the department heads directly)

  • Hours Requirement This is for 505 students only. Please ignore all references to the Class Hours Requirement. However, it may give you inspiration for projects to propose to Dr. Cecil.

  • Announcements New information will be posted as it comes up on the Class Announcements page. Please check it frequently in order to stay as up-to-date as possible.

Must Do Assignments

Assignment #1

Put your contact information on the contact page.
Read all of the directions first before attempting the assignment.
Make sure you hit PUBLISH when you are done. Use the following format:

Your Name
Your phone number
Your e-mail address
TXT MSG: Y Facebook: N
Available for Fill-ins: Y

Note: Please remember to email your contact information to both the Communications Director and your 305 Coordinator to let them know that you posted, so you can get on the official mailing list.

  • To find your contact information, follow the links on the Class Contacts Page.
  • Copy your contact info from the Wiki and paste it into an email to the Communications Director.
  • If you are having problems editing the page, check the Wiki Instructions page. If that doesn't solve the problem, contact the Communications Director or Jeff. If you are have run into additional obstacles, please post a question on the Class Q & A page.
  • I've already sent you the password for this semester in an e-mail, and announced it in class. If you still can't find it, email Jeff Jacoby at jjacoby@sfsu.edu.

Assignment #2

Update the On-Air Schedule to include the show name and the full name of every show member. Write or update your Bio on the On-Air Show Description page.

  • Follow the instructions located at the top of the On-Air Schedule and On-Air Show Description pages.
  • Don't worry about formatting, because we can always come back and fix it later. The words are what is most important. If you want to focus on format, you have two choices:
    • Find an example where the formatting is correct. Click edit. Find that example on the left and copy it. Paste it where your information should be. Change the words so it includes your information.
    • Or, click on the formatting help link in the upper right (while editing) and follow the examples they have for you.

Assignment #3

Sit-in on a 505 veteran show.

  • In order to do so, you must contact the Show/DJ prior to the show (CC the Communications Director and your 305 Coordinator).
  • Pick a show that interests you.
    • A music dj shouldn't really sit in on a talk show and vice versa.
  • After sitting in a show, you must send a thank you email to the Show/DJ (CC Communications Director/305 Coordinator)
    • It's a great habit to get into for post job interviews, internships, etc.
    • Note: You will receive no credit for this assignment if a thank you letter is not sent.

Assignment #4

Each student should take the time to vote on items on the Wiki Wish List

  • You may only vote once for each item. You should vote on every item unless it's confusing.
  • Voting against ideas that you consider to be a waste of money is just as -- if not MORE important than voting positively for ideas you support
  • Consider that we have a fairly fixed budget, so more expensive "wishes" should be weighed more carefully than inexpensive ones
  • Any Questions about the Items on the Wish List should be posted on the Class Q & A page.
  • Instructions are located at the top of the Wiki Wish List page. If you do not know how to edit a page, please refer to the Wiki Instructions.

Special instructions

  • Add this site to your bookmarks or favorites so that you can easily refer back to it. The bookmarks or Favorites button should be located near the top of the Web Browser.
